Lion's star moves to Switzerland

Finnish ice hockey player Jere Innala will join Swiss club HC Lugano for the next two seasons, having recently played in Sweden's SHL and won the Champions Hockey League.

Jere Innala, a forward for the Finnish national ice hockey team who has participated in three World Championships, is making a significant career move by signing with Swiss team HC Lugano. His contract is set to last until spring 2028, covering the next two seasons. This past season, the 27-year-old showcased his skills with Frölunda in Sweden's SHL, where he played 46 games, registering 21 goals and 18 assists. Moreover, he achieved notable success by scoring the game-winning goal in the Champions Hockey League final against Luleå earlier this March.

Throughout his career, Innala has played in Finland's SM-liiga, Sweden's SHL, and has even competed in the NHL, where he made 17 appearances for the Colorado Avalanche during the 2024-2025 season. His upcoming role at Lugano will place him in a competitive league, as the team finished fifth in the Swiss league this season and is preparing to face Zürich in the playoff quarterfinals. Significantly, Lugano currently hosts four Finnish players, which may aid in Innala's adjustment to the new team dynamics.

This transfer highlights the increasing trend of Finnish players moving abroad, particularly to competitive leagues like the Swiss league, which has gained popularity for its high level of play. With Innala's experience and recent achievements, his move to HC Lugano could have implications for both his career trajectory and the club's performance in the league.
