Families with autistic individuals will be exempt from IPTU and garbage collection fee in Macapá

The Macapá City Council approved a law exempting families with autistic members from property tax and garbage collection fees.

In a recent session on Tuesday, the Macapá City Council approved Project Law No. 169/25, which provides tax exemptions for families with individuals diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This legislation, proposed by council member Cláudio Góes of the Solidarity party, seeks to alleviate the financial burden on families dealing with the challenges of autism. Before its final vote, the proposal received positive reviews from the committees on Constitution, Justice and Writing, as well as on Taxation, Finance, and Budget.

The approved tax benefits specifically target the residential property belonging to the taxpayer, their spouse, or children diagnosed with ASD. The exemption applies to only one property per family, regardless of its size, provided it is used exclusively for residence. This measure aims to provide essential financial relief and support to families who often face increased expenses related to therapy and care for autistic individuals.

With the local government taking this step, it not only acknowledges the specific needs of families with autistic members but also sets a precedent for other municipalities in Brazil. Such initiatives may encourage broader discussions around the support and resources required for individuals with disabilities and their families, paving the way for more inclusive policies that address socio-economic disparities in access to care and support services.
