Terrible workplace accident during the maintenance of a saw - fines for supervisors

Three supervisors were fined after an employee was injured while servicing a bandsaw.

Three supervisors were issued fines in relation to a serious workplace accident that occurred during maintenance of a bandsaw in February 2025. According to the permit and control authority, the machine unexpectedly made a work movement during maintenance operations, leading to the incident. Following the accident, a workplace safety inspection revealed multiple deficiencies in occupational safety practices at the site.

The inspection found that the hazards associated with the bandsaw had not been properly assessed, the risks had not been evaluated, and there was no operational manual for the equipment. Additionally, the safety switch on the bandsaw was found to be malfunctioning and had not been included in the workplace’s maintenance program. The Varsinais-Suomi District Court ruled that occupational safety regulations had been violated, leading to the convictions.

In a ruling given last week, the district court imposed fines for occupational safety violations on the company’s CEO, maintenance manager, and foreman. Although the production manager was also indicted, the charges against him were dismissed. This case underscores the critical importance of adhering to safety regulations and highlights the repercussions of neglecting workplace safety protocols in Finland.
