Man dies from the wheel loader's rotating chains – CEO sentenced
A fatal workplace accident involving a man contacting rotating chains in a clip aggregate has led to a CEO being sentenced for negligence in Sweden.
In August 2024, a tragic workplace accident occurred when a worker came into contact with rotating chains in a wheel loader's clip aggregate, resulting in his death. Reports indicate that the worker exited the cabin without turning off the equipment, which triggered a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The prosecution claimed that the CEO had acted negligently by failing to implement a proper systematic work environment strategy, which contributed to the unsafe conditions that led to the accident.
The Luleå District Court has now ruled in favor of the prosecution, following their argument regarding the lack of safety measures in place. A key point raised during the trial was the absence of a door switch on the wheel loader, which was supposed to be installed but was found on the cabin floor instead. This failure to ensure adequate safety features played a significant role in the court's decision, establishing accountability for workplace safety standards at the company.
Consequently, the CEO received a conditional sentence and was ordered to pay fines totaling 33,000 kronor. In addition, the company was hit with a serious corporate penalty of 1.2 million kronor, along with damages allotted to the deceased worker's two children and further compensation to the estate of the deceased. This case highlights the critical importance of workplace safety regulations and the duty of employers to protect their employees, which could influence future corporate practices regarding worker safety in Sweden.
