In Riga, cable thefts could lead to up to five years in prison

Two individuals have been arrested in connection with a string of cable thefts in Riga, facing up to five years in prison.

On November 19 last year, the State Police in the Riga region initiated an investigation into the theft of communication network cables, which involved breaking into a building housing the cable infrastructure. During the investigation, authorities identified a 1983-born man and a 1990-born woman, who were already on the police's radar due to previous incidents. The police determined that these individuals were likely connected to 14 additional thefts of electronic communication cables that had occurred in the Ķengarags neighborhood over the past year, prompting ongoing criminal proceedings.

Additionally, it was revealed that on January 15 of this year, the suspects had also stolen communication cables from a fenced area in the Pārdaugava district. Following this discovery, State Police arrested both individuals, consolidating all prior criminal cases into a single investigation. The criminal proceedings were classified as thefts committed after unlawful entry into a premises, or from a storage facility or equipment that connects storage units, carrying a sentence of up to five years imprisonment under the law.

This case illustrates a growing issue with cable thefts in urban areas, which not only disrupts communication services but can also pose significant problems for local infrastructure and safety. As the investigation unfolds, the police are likely to strengthen their measures to combat such crimes and prevent future incidents, aiming to enhance public safety and ensure that essential services remain uninterrupted.
