Latvian citizen sentenced to six years in prison for espionage in favor of Russia
A Latvian citizen has been sentenced to six years in prison for espionage on behalf of Russia after pleading guilty.
A Riga city court has confirmed an agreement between prosecutors and a Latvian citizen arrested last summer for espionage, resulting in a six-year prison sentence with an additional two years of probation supervision. Considering the time already spent in custody, the individual will serve an additional five years and six months in prison. The accused, who was a construction manager, had responsibilities that facilitated the gathering of information regarding the construction of new military facilities in Latvia.
The State Security Service (VDD) arrested the individual on August 27, 2025, during an investigation that documented several instances of the accused collecting intelligence on behalf of the Russian military intelligence (GRU). It was discovered that the individual had shared information about the locations, plans, and security measures of various military sites in Latvia, including weapons depots. The provided intelligence raised concerns about national security and the extent of foreign espionage activities in the region.
This case highlights the ongoing issues of cybersecurity and foreign espionage faced by Latvia, particularly given its geographical proximity to Russia. The apparent ease with which sensitive military information could be accessed by outside parties underscores the necessity for heightened security measures within the country. As Eastern European nations grapple with a historical context of espionage, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges that Latvia continues to confront in safeguarding its national sovereignty and security.
