Purges in the Russian Ministry of Defense Continue – Now the Former 'Right Hand' of Shoigu Has Been Arrested
The arrest of Ruslan Tsalikov, a former deputy defense minister under Sergei Shoigu, highlights ongoing purges within the Russian Ministry of Defense amid corruption charges.
The recent arrest of Ruslan Tsalikov, who served as the deputy defense minister under Sergei Shoigu, has generated significant attention among Russian nationalist war bloggers, who have celebrated his downfall. Tsalikov's removal from the highly influential position came after Shoigu was reassigned from defense minister to secretary of the Security Council in 2024. This incident marks just one aspect of a larger purge within the Ministry of Defense, as three other deputy ministers who served during Shoigu's leadership have also been arrested amid corruption allegations.
As part of the ongoing investigations, one of the accused, Timur Ivanov, has already received a 13-year prison sentence, while two others, Dmitri Bulgakov and Pavel Popov, remain in pre-trial detention awaiting their verdicts. Tsalikov himself is currently under house arrest as authorities continue to unravel the depth of corruption allegations within the defense establishment. Mark Galeotti, a noted Russian expert, has remarked that unlike the former deputy defense ministers, Shoigu enjoys a close relationship with President Vladimir Putin, which may shield him from similar fates.
This situation suggests a complex dynamic within the Russian government, where loyalty appears to be prioritized over competence, especially in the wake of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Despite high-profile arrests, some analysts speculate that those closely aligned with Putin, like Shoigu, may remain insulated from the purges, highlighting the challenging interplay between power, loyalty, and accountability in the current political landscape of Russia.
