"Try Failing as Much as You Want"... Why Did the School Award a 'Failed Robot'?
A student at Seoul Robot High School received an award at a school competition focused on learning from failure, despite his robot collapsing after a design miscalculation.
At Seoul Robot High School in Gangnam, Seoul, a student named Lee Moo-chang shared the story behind his robot that, due to a design flaw, collapsed backwards when tested. Lee, who modeled the robot after a projectile from a shooting game, initially succeeded in its operation, but the central component eventually broke under load due to miscalculations. This clear failure, however, did not deter him; instead, he earned a silver award in a school competition titled 'Failure Research Institute', which encourages students to openly discuss and present their failures.
The 'Failure Research Institute', initiated by Principal Oh Seong-hoon based on a teacher's suggestion, aims to help vocational high school students cope with the pressures and anxieties tied to their future careers. As vocational students often feel overwhelmed by the weight of their future professions, the school seeks to create a safe environment where failures are viewed not as dead ends but as opportunities for growth. This initiative has gained traction with increasing participation rates in the competition, reflecting a cultural shift towards embracing failure as part of the learning process.
Initially met with skepticism among teachers regarding students' willingness to share their experiences of failure, the program has shown significant engagement, growing from 50 participants in its inaugural year to 94 in the second competition held last December. One example of resilience from the program includes student Kang Yu-na, who faced challenges when team members from her school dropped out of a competition, yet persevered, choosing to complete the project with the remaining members. This storytelling and collaborative aspect reinforces the school's message that education is as much about overcoming failures as it is about achieving success.
