Two cargo ships hit by unknown projectile off the coast of the UAE
Two cargo ships were struck by an unknown projectile near the UAE coast, causing damage and prompting crew evacuations.
On Wednesday, the British Maritime Trade Operations reported that two cargo ships were struck by an unknown projectile off the coast of the United Arab Emirates. The first vessel, a container ship, was damaged by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, approximately 25 nautical miles northwest of Ras al-Khaimah. The impact led to a fire onboard, resulting in the evacuation of the crew, who requested assistance. Fortunately, all crew members were reported safe from the incident.
The second ship was reported to be a cargo vessel sailing about 50 nautical miles northwest of Dubai, which also reported damage from an 'unknown projectile'. Like the first ship, the crew onboard was unharmed. These incidents come amid an increase in attacks on container ships in the region, following military actions initiated by Israel and the United States against Iran on February 28 of this year.
While Iran has not claimed responsibility for these attacks, there have been ongoing tensions with attacks on vessels in and around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway through which approximately 20% of global oil and natural gas trade passes. The increasing frequency of such incidents raises concerns over maritime security and the potential implications for global trade routes in the context of ongoing geopolitical conflicts.
