Opposed to the Extension of Line 5 to Geomdan and Gimpo, Incheon City Suddenly Changes Its Stance to Welcome It – What Is the Reason?

Incheon City has shifted its stance to welcome the preliminary feasibility study's approval for the extension of Seoul Subway Line 5 to Geomdan and Gimpo after initially opposing it, seemingly to negotiate for additional subway stations.

Incheon City has expressed its unexpected support for the preliminary feasibility study's approval of the extension project for Seoul Subway Line 5 to Geomdan and Gimpo, after previously opposing the proposal from the metropolitan transportation committee. The change in stance is believed to be a strategic move to push for additional subway stations in the Geomdan area. Mayor Yoo Jeong-bok stated that the approval reflects the long-standing wishes of Incheon citizens and the city's efforts in this regard.

The subway extension aims to connect Seoul's Banghwa area through Incheon's Geomdan to Gimpo, with plans for two new stations to be added in Geomdan. This has been a contentious issue between Incheon and Gimpo, as Incheon has insisted on constructing four new stations, while Gimpo argued for only one. Eventually, a compromise was reached with a mediation plan introducing two stations in Geomdan, which Gimpo accepted, but Incheon remained resistant due to its demand for additional stations.

As Incheon celebrates the feasibility study's passage, it remains focused on advocating for the potential construction of an extra station at Wandang, particularly in an area previously associated with a past apartment collapse incident. The city is also exploring ways to avoid covering costs related to the relocation of a construction waste facility in Seoul's Gangseo District, highlighting ongoing negotiations about the financial responsibilities between the involved parties.
