Serious difficulties at the Sodankylä Observatory of the University of Oulu – investigation reveals extensive problems
The Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory has faced significant financial, procurement, and management issues, revealing a consistent budget overrun of over half a million euros annually.
The Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory (SGO) is currently experiencing serious challenges in its finances, procurement, and management, as highlighted by a report commissioned by the University of Oulu. This investigation, initiated by the university's rector in December and concluded in late February, has uncovered alarming budget overruns, with the observatory exceeding its budget by more than half a million euros each year.
The findings indicate that the observatory's financial situation has been precarious for several years, leading to operational losses. From 2023 to 2025, the total operational loss is reported to exceed 2.4 million euros, with a near 900,000 euro deficit anticipated for 2024 despite prior budgetary preparations. The current management under acting director Arto Vaarala has been described as a temporary arrangement, following the absence of the former director, Professor Eija Tanskanen, during the investigation process.
The implications of these financial troubles are significant, affecting not only the observatory's operations but also its reputation and ongoing projects within the scientific community. With the assistant rector’s acknowledgment of a temporary leadership setup, the university may face challenges in restoring confidence and addressing the systemic issues identified in the report. Immediate actions and strategic planning will be crucial in reversing the negative trajectory observed in the observatory's budget performance and overall governance.
