The Oulu police have wrapped up their preliminary investigation into a serious environmental crime suspected to have occurred in Hukkajoki, located in northern Suomussalmi, during the summer of 2024. This investigation covers various serious charges including severe animal welfare violations and environmental destruction. The estimated damages to the local ecosystem and wildlife are significant, totaling around 2.2 million euros, highlighting the severity of the incident and its implications for the environment and local communities.

The investigation revealed that the destruction of the river mussels alone is valued at nearly 1.9 million euros, underlining the economic and ecological impact on the region's biodiversity. Additionally, the fishing industry has suffered estimated damages amounting to around 254,480 euros due to the adverse effects of these environmental violations. The total number of mussels reported dead as a result of unauthorized activities has been approximated at 3,283, pointing to the scale of the damage inflicted on this sensitive aquatic habitat.

In the course of the investigation, a total of ten individuals linked to the logging process have been questioned as suspects. All accused parties have denied any wrongdoing concerning the alleged crimes.
