The European Union will push members towards green production

The European Commission proposed new rules to support companies in Europe producing green technology equipment like wind turbines and electric car batteries.

European Commissioner for Industry Stéphane Séjourné recently announced a draft for the Industrial Accelerator Act, which aims to boost manufacturing in Europe by streamlining licensing processes and establishing minimum requirements for components produced within the EU. This initiative is intended to facilitate faster production of essential green technologies as the EU ramps up its environmental goals.

A key component of the proposal includes a labeling system that will mark steel as 'green', signifying the carbon emissions associated with its production. This label will help consumers make informed choices while also holding manufacturers accountable for their environmental impact. Additionally, new requirements will integrate carbon emission standards into public procurement processes, promoting sustainability in government contracts.

Furthermore, the draft legislation seeks to impose restrictions on foreign investments from companies holding significant market shares in emerging sectors such as electric vehicles, battery production, photovoltaic products, and critical raw materials. This approach is designed to strengthen European companies and reduce reliance on extra-European suppliers, thereby fostering a more resilient local economy amid rising environmental standards in the global market.
