EU orders to buy European - public procurements must favor European green products

The European Commission mandates that public procurements prioritize EU-made products and environmentally friendly solutions across various sectors, particularly in the automotive and clean energy industries.

In a significant move towards promoting local economies and sustainability, the European Commission has introduced a proposal aimed at directing industrial investments in the EU. This proposal emphasizes the need for public procurement to favor products manufactured within Europe, particularly focusing on environmentally friendly goods. It targets crucial sectors such as the automotive industry and clean energy, mandating that these sectors not only look to EU origins for materials but also incorporate low-carbon contributions, particularly in aluminum and cement used in construction and vehicle manufacturing.

Specifically, the new guidelines stipulate that at least 25% of aluminum used in construction or automotive manufacturing must be low-carbon and sourced from the EU. For public procurements of electric and hybrid vehicles, a substantial compliance requirement has been set, stating that 70% of the components must be sourced from within the EU, with assembly processes also required to occur in EU countries. This strict enforcement aims to enhance economic stability within Europe while promoting green technologies and products.

Moreover, the commission emphasizes that clean energy initiatives must prioritize European products and technologies, affecting sectors like batteries, solar and wind power systems, heat pumps, and even nuclear energy facilities. This strategic approach is designed to reinforce Europe’s stance in competitive global markets while simultaneously addressing ecological integrity, marking a pivotal shift towards localized sustainability practices in the EU public procurement arena.
