Universities prepare for an increase in applicants

Estonian universities are getting ready for a surge in student applications due to a larger cohort of school graduates in the next five years.

Estonian higher education institutions are gearing up for a significant rise in the number of applicants as a record number of high school graduates are expected to complete their studies within the next five years. Tõnu Viik, the rector of Tallinn University, emphasized that universities need to increase student placements to maintain access to higher education. A failure to do so could result in a more competitive admission process, potentially denying many young applicants the opportunity to further their education.

In anticipation of this influx, Viik hopes for the hiring of additional faculty to manage the increased student load. However, he also acknowledged that the existing faculty may experience heightened workloads due to this surge. He reassured educators that their contributions will still be valuable in the long run, despite the projected decline in high school graduate numbers post-2031. This vote of confidence highlights the essential role of educators even in fluctuating demographic trends.

Moreover, the Estonian government's ambition to foster a more educated populace drives the need for more university spots. Even as the number of high school graduates is forecasted to decline after 2031, the government plans to uphold its educational targets, which implies a sustained demand for university education beyond the current levels. Therefore, universities face the dual challenge of expanding capacity while ensuring quality education for an increasing number of students.
