This year, the number of children starting school is significantly smaller
The number of children starting school in Estonia this year is significantly lower than last year, with specific regions experiencing growth.
In Estonia, March is the month when thousands of families search for school placements for their children entering the first grade. This year, the number of children beginning school has decreased significantly compared to last year, though there are exceptions in certain areas. Notably, in Kambja, the population has been increasing, leading to rapid filling of classes in the new Tõrvandi school, where initial classes were filled within minutes. According to data from Tartu's Education Department, the number of primary school learners is set to decrease by nearly 300 next academic year, as only 1,200 will begin first grade instead of 1,500. A similar trend is observed in the capital, Tallinn, where the number of children enrolling in school has also declined. "Unfortunately, the number of children in Tallinn is still decreasing. This year, there are about 400 fewer children who are supposed to start school compared to last year, and more children are finishing primary school than are beginning their education," said Krista Keedus, the head of education management at the Tallinn Education Department.
