14 tons of copper disappeared: two Romanians arrested

A heist involving the theft of 14 tons of copper from a manufacturing company in Brianza has led to the arrest of two Romanian men.

In a professional heist, 14 tons of copper went missing from a metalworking company in Brianza, resulting in significant financial losses for the business, which had to halt production and reassess supplier contracts. Local Carabinieri in Carate Brianza have identified and reported two Romanian suspects aged 27 and 53 from Romani settlements in the province of Turin, who, alongside a third accomplice, orchestrated the elaborate theft. They had previously been linked to another unsuccessful attempt on December 10, which led to their identification based on surveillance footage and ongoing investigations.

The incident began in November when the thieves broke through the gate and shutters to access the warehouse, successfully stealing copper that is valued at nearly 200,000 euros on the black market. Following detailed analysis of video recordings, the military police pieced together the sequence of events and movements of the suspects. The investigation has highlighted a troubling trend of organized crime in the area, illustrating the vulnerabilities present within industrial sites and the impact on local businesses from such criminal activities.

The arrests underscore the ongoing struggles law enforcement faces in combating copper thefts, particularly involving organized groups that target industrial facilities. The consequences of this crime extend beyond financial losses, as affected companies now face interruptions in their operations, which can have lasting repercussions on the local economy. Authorities are under pressure to enhance security measures within the metalworking sector to prevent such incidents from recurring.
