Somalia: Somaliland Signs Contract to Electrify Schools Nationwide
Somaliland has signed a contract to electrify schools across several regions with the support of the World Bank to improve educational access and quality.
Somaliland's Ministry of Energy and Minerals has taken a significant step to improve educational infrastructure by signing a contract that will provide electricity to schools across multiple regions. The formal agreement was reached during a ceremony in Hargeisa, attended by key ministry officials, reflecting a serious commitment to enhancing energy access in the education sector. This initiative is part of broader efforts to ensure that educational institutions are adequately equipped to meet the learning needs of students.
The project will impact 57 schools situated in regions including Maroodi-Jeex, Awdal, Saaxil, Togdheer, and Sanaag. The officials emphasized that reliable electricity will extend learning hours and facilitate evening classes, addressing challenges related to educational time constraints in a region where access to modern amenities can be limited. This enhancement is expected to transform the educational landscape by allowing students to engage in more comprehensive learning opportunities.
Funded by the World Bank, this initiative underscores the importance of international support in local development projects, particularly in the educational sector. As Somaliland seeks to bolster its educational offerings, the electrification of schools is a critical part of fostering a conducive learning environment that meets the demands of a modern educational curriculum and ultimately contributes to the region's sustainable development goals.
