Somaliland and Israel are enhancing their cooperation on water management through a high-level delegation visit focused on training and capacity building.
Somaliland's Director General of the Ministry of Water Development, Aden Abdela Abdule, is leading a 25-member delegation of water professionals to Israel. This visit marks a significant moment as it represents the first high-level technical engagement following Israel's formal recognition of Somaliland on December 26, 2024. The delegation is set to participate in a specialized training program aimed at bolstering Somaliland's institutional capacity and ensuring long-term water security.
During their visit, the delegation engaged with senior officials from the Israel Water Authority. Key discussions revolved around best practices in integrated water resource management, establishing regulatory frameworks, digital monitoring systems, and the implementation of large-scale desalination projects. Such initiatives are crucial for Somaliland, which faces challenges regarding water scarcity and infrastructure development.
Additionally, Aden met with Dr. Eynat Shlein, head of MASHAV, Israel's Agency for International Development Cooperation, to discuss potential avenues for expanded technical cooperation and capacity-building programs that align with sustainable development goals. These discussions signify a deepening of bilateral ties and innovative approaches to addressing water management challenges in Somaliland.
