Lithuania commemorates its 36th anniversary of independence with ceremonies including flower-laying and speeches from officials and notable figures.
Lithuania is celebrating the 36th anniversary of its independence restoration with a series of ceremonial events. The day will begin in Vilnius' Independence Square with a flower-laying ceremony at the monument 'Message' dedicated to March 11, followed by a commemoration event in the Seimas (Parliament). The celebration honors the day Lithuania proclaimed its independence and includes the presentation of the State Independence Scholarship. Seimas Speaker Juozas Olekas is set to open the event with a welcome speech. Notable guests at the ceremony will include Moldova's President Maia Sandu and Algimantas Norvilas, a signatory of the Lithuanian Independence Act. Young representative Mūza Svetickaitė will also deliver a speech, while Iceland's President Halla Tomasdottir will address attendees through a video message. This gathering highlights the importance of Lithuania's independence while also emphasizing cultural and academic contributions. This year's State Independence Scholarship will be awarded to Adomas Klimantas, an economist from ISM University of Management and Economics, for his work on Lithuania's economic history. His project, titled 'The Story of Poverty and Success: Lithuania's Economic Path from 1900-2025', reflects significant aspects of Lithuania's economic evolution since regaining independence. The day will culminate with a flag-raising ceremony featuring the flags of the three Baltic States, underscoring regional solidarity and shared history.
