Trade in Ipiales and Tulcán awaits a solution to reactivate transactions

Thousands of workers from the cargo transport and international trade sectors held a protest in Ipiales, demanding lower tariffs and fees for imports and exports between Ecuador and Colombia.

On March 9, approximately a thousand workers involved in cargo transport and international trade in Ipiales, a border city with Ecuador, participated in a protest march. They gathered at two locations in the city and marched to the Rumichaca international bridge, seeking attention from the governments of Ecuador and Colombia. The demonstrators, including transporters, warehouse agents, loaders, and local business owners, carried banners urging President Daniel Noboa of Ecuador and President Gustavo Petro of Colombia to engage in dialogue to address trade barriers.

The protest highlighted widespread frustration over high tariffs and costs that have been imposed on imports and exports by the two countries, which have hindered cross-border trade. The workers' procession spanned 7.2 km, emphasizing the urgent need for a resolution to reinvigorate trade relations and ease the financial burden on businesses reliant on international commerce. The event showcased collective action by the local economy's stakeholders who are deeply affected by these issues.

Upon reaching the international bridge, truck drivers obstructed vehicle passage to further draw attention to their cause. This blockade served as a significant statement of their desperation and determination to prompt action from the governments. The situation underscores the interconnected nature of the economies of Ecuador and Colombia, and the necessity for both nations to collaborate on trade policies to support local economies and ensure smoother transactions across the border.
