Ecuador and Colombia Business Leaders Request Temporary Suspension of Tariffs and Duties While Governments Reach Agreements

Business associations from Ecuador and Colombia are urging their governments to halt tariff increases that are negatively impacting trade and production chains in both nations.

Business associations from Ecuador and Colombia have issued a joint statement requesting the governments of both countries to suspend recent tariff increases. The Ecuadorian Business Committee (CEE) and the National Association of Industrialists (ANDI) of Colombia argue that the reciprocal tariffs, which range from 30% to 50%, are severely affecting their production and export chains. This comes at a time when Ecuador has raised security tariffs on Colombian goods and Colombia is preparing to increase its tariffs on Ecuadorian products as well.

The economic toll is significant, as both organizations highlighted that the recent hikes in tariffs are leading to considerable financial losses for many businesses. They pointed out that the increase from a 30% to a 50% tariff not only threatens the viability of various companies but also jeopardizes the stability of entire sectors that rely on cross-border trade. The business leaders expressed concern that sustained tariff increases could destabilize both Ecuadorian and Colombian economies.

This appeal for tariff suspension is set against a backdrop of escalating trade tensions fueled by security concerns. Ecuador's government has justified the hike in security tariffs as a necessary measure for safety, while Colombia's potential increase is seen as a reaction to Ecuador's actions. This situation necessitates urgent discussions between the two governments to find a resolution that maintains free trade and protects the economic interests of both countries.
