Daniel Munduruku, the first indigenous person to hold a seat in the São Paulo Academy of Letters, will be inaugurated on March 19, 2026.

The São Paulo Academy of Letters is set to hold the inauguration ceremony for writer Daniel Munduruku on March 19, 2026, at 6 PM. This event will take place in the organization's auditorium located in downtown São Paulo. Munduruku's election in September of the previous year makes him the first indigenous individual to ever hold one of the Academy's 40 seats in its 116-year history, a position vacated after the death of advertising executive and academic Roberto Duailibi. Munduruku, who belongs to the Munduruku people, has an impressive literary portfolio with over 60 published books, mainly targeted towards young readers. His works emphasize the importance of cultural diversity, ancestral heritage, and the traditions of indigenous peoples. He debuted in literature in 1996 with "Histórias de índio" and has since focused on writing that aims to elevate and celebrate the indigenous experience and storytelling. In addition to his literary achievements, Munduruku holds degrees in philosophy, history, and psychology, and has a master's and doctoral degree in education from the University of São Paulo. He also completed a post-doctorate in linguistics from the Federal University of São Carlos. Moreover, he presides over the Uk’a Institute, which is dedicated to preserving and promoting the knowledge and cultural heritage of native peoples.
