Beach where tourist died in Fernando de Noronha has no lifeguards or signage

A tourist drowned at Praia do Meio in Fernando de Noronha, which lacks permanent lifeguards, warning signs, and support buoys.

Praia do Meio in Fernando de Noronha, a beautiful but perilous destination, witnessed the tragic drowning of a tourist on Monday, August 9. Notably, this beach does not have any permanent lifeguard service, warning signage indicating dangers, or support buoys that could have assisted swimmers in distress. This incident has raised significant concerns about the safety measures available on the island, particularly as it falls within the Area of Environmental Protection and is under the jurisdiction of the government of Pernambuco.

This recent drowning is not an isolated event, as there have been previous fatalities involving tourists in similar circumstances. In November 2022, another tourist from São Paulo suffered cardiac arrest after drowning at Praia do Cachorro, followed by the 2021 drowning of a 45-year-old visitor from Curitiba at Praia da Cacimba do Padre. The repeated nature of these incidents prompted the Pernambuco Public Ministry (MPPE) to initiate an investigation two years ago into the absence of lifeguards on the island's beaches. However, it appears that little has changed since then regarding safety provisions.

The concern becomes even more critical considering the natural conditions of the sea around Fernando de Noronha, which typically becomes more turbulent between December and April. This seasonal change increases the risk for swimmers, highlighting the urgent need for improved safety measures and infrastructure to protect visitors. Without necessary precautions and support systems in place, the island risks more tragic outcomes, calling for immediate action from local authorities to enhance beach safety and awareness for tourists.
