Love 21: After her son's diagnosis, a nurse creates an institute for people with Down syndrome in AL
Neila Sabino, a nurse, founded the Instituto Amor 21 in Alagoas to support families of children with Down syndrome after her own son's diagnosis.
Neila Sabino, a nurse from Alagoas, started her journey towards helping others after her son Arthur was born with Down syndrome. Faced with the challenges and lack of information regarding the condition, Neila transformed her personal experience into a community project, leading to the establishment of the Instituto Amor 21. Today, the institute celebrates 12 years of providing care, support, and guidance to over 200 families, helping them navigate the complexities associated with the syndrome at various life stages.
The institute arose from Neilaβs dream of motherhood, which was long awaited. Throughout her pregnancy, everything proceeded normally, and no abnormalities were identified during routine check-ups. However, it was only after Arthur's birth that the diagnosis of Down syndrome was made, an event that profoundly impacted Neilaβs life and perspective on parenting. This life-changing news sparked a dedicated effort to create a structured support system for other families facing similar circumstances.
Instituto Amor 21 has since become a crucial resource for parents and individuals with Down syndrome, offering essential services that include emotional support, educational resources, and developmental programs. By highlighting her personal journey and the institute's mission, Neila aims to raise awareness and advocate for the rights and needs of those with Down syndrome, fostering a community where families can find hope and empowerment in their experiences.
