Abia residents lament soaring fuel prices, transport costs
Residents of Abia State are expressing frustration over rising fuel prices, which have led to significant increases in transportation costs.
Residents of Abia State, Nigeria, are experiencing the burden of soaring fuel prices, leading to increased transport costs that are affecting daily commuting. As reported, petrol prices have risen dramatically, with costs in Umuahia reaching as high as N1,500 per litre by the evening. This price surge has forced many commuters to opt for walking short distances instead of using public transportation, significantly altering their travel behavior in the area.
Transport fares have escalated accordingly, with the cost of trips in several areas within Abia substantially increased. For instance, the price for a journey from Umuahia to the Onuimo boundary has jumped from N500 to N700, and the fare from Umuahia to the nearby university has doubled from N400 to N700. This inflation in transport costs is creating a substantial burden on residents, and commuters are becoming increasingly agitated as they struggle to settle these higher fees amidst rising living costs.
A local tricycle rider expressed despair over the drop in passengers due to the soaring prices, highlighting the tough choices that residents are compelled to make. Many are resisting fare increases and are resorting to trekking, reflecting a widespread sentiment of frustration and financial strain among the populace. This situation calls for urgent governmental intervention to address fuel price hikes and transport fare inflation, as these issues significantly impact the daily lives of the citizens in Abia State.
