Airline operators lament as aviation fuel hits N1,800 per litre
Airline Operators in Nigeria express concern over the substantial increase in aviation fuel prices, which have surged to N1,800 per litre, causing financial strain on domestic airlines.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria are alarmed by the recent dramatic rise in the price of aviation fuel, Jet-A1, which has escalated from approximately N1,000 to N1,800 per litre in just two weeks. This sharp increase of around 80 percent is severely impacting the financial viability of domestic airlines, a sector already beset with challenges. Aviation fuel accounts for a substantial portion of operating expenses, roughly 30 to 35 percent, making fluctuations in its cost particularly impactful on airline operations.
The surge in aviation fuel prices is attributed to various factors, including ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have affected global fuel prices. This increase comes at a time when the airline industry in Nigeria is already facing significant operational challenges, and the rising costs could lead to further financial strain for airlines struggling to remain profitable amidst a competitive and turbulent economic landscape.
Additionally, the spokesperson for the Airline Operators of Nigeria, Obiora Okonkwo, mentioned in a television interview that, despite these challenges, most airlines have opted not to immediately impose the additional costs on passengers. This decision reflects an effort to maintain customer loyalty and avoid diminishing demand in an already fragile market, but it raises concerns about the long-term sustainability of the airline industry in Nigeria if fuel prices continue to rise.
