Florida man, 22, dies after snorkelling incident in state’s St. Johns River
A 22-year-old Florida man drowned while snorkelling in the St. Johns River after going missing during a struggle to swim back to shore.
A tragic incident occurred in Florida's St. Johns River when a 22-year-old man from Daytona Beach, identified as Samuel Oche, drowned while snorkelling. According to reports from the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Oche went missing underwater after attempting to swim about 50 feet offshore. His girlfriend, alongside other witnesses, tried to rescue him but was unable to hold onto him due to the current.
Emergency responders, including the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the Volusia Sheriff’s Office dive team, quickly mobilized to locate Oche. Boat sonar was utilized to detect the possible location of the young man's body, demonstrating the urgency and seriousness of the search efforts. Unfortunately, Oche was recovered several hours later, around 8 p.m.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with water activities, especially in currents that can rapidly change. The local authorities expressed their condolences in the wake of this tragic event, highlighting the community's grief over the loss of such a young life while engaging in leisure activities.
