Municipalities have submitted 509 objects for EU funding for shelters

Latvian municipalities have submitted 509 projects for EU funding to establish shelters, with over 1600 properties deemed suitable after evaluation.

In Latvia, an evaluation by the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) has identified more than 1600 out of approximately 5000 inspected sites as potentially suitable for the setup of protective shelters. This initiative is part of a broader effort to secure additional funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERAF), with efforts currently underway to secure an extra 30 million euros, on top of the 22 million euros allocated last year. This substantial funding reflects the Government’s commitment to enhancing safety measures across municipalities.

Interior Minister Rihards Kozlovskis highlighted Latvia's financial position in comparison to neighboring countries like Estonia and Lithuania. He noted that while Estonia has only secured around 2 million euros for shelters, Latvia’s efforts have led to a much larger budget exceeding 40 million euros. Kozlovskis emphasized that this disparity showcases Latvia's proactive approach and progress in comparison to its regional counterparts, particularly in their inclusivity of state and municipal properties for funding eligibility.

Since last year, municipalities have been eligible to apply for the first round of funding for the development of shelters. Out of the anticipated 570 projects, 509 applications have been submitted, with a predominance of municipal ownership among these projects. Despite the achievements thus far, more applications are expected as the government plans to launch another funding round, highlighting the ongoing commitment to improving community safety in Latvia.
