In Latvia, 407 objects could be used to create shelters

An assessment revealed that 407 state and municipal properties in Latvia are suitable for the establishment of shelters, according to the Ministry of the Interior.

A recent assessment conducted by the Latvian Ministry of the Interior identified 407 state and municipal properties that are deemed suitable for the establishment of shelters. This information comes as part of a report presented at the Cabinet's Crisis Management meeting, highlighting the ongoing efforts to enhance civil protection within the country. Of the total 1,278 inspected properties, 127 were found to partially meet the requirements, while 1,755 were ruled as unsuitable for shelter creation, and another 1,270 properties could not be evaluated due to accessibility issues.

The report also updates progress regarding the implementation of the European Union's cohesion policy program for 2021-2027, which focuses on adapting and equipping shelters for civil protection purposes. To date, 509 applications have been submitted for the adaptation and equipping of various properties as shelters. Most of these properties fall under municipal ownership, reflecting the local government's role in improving disaster preparedness and community safety.

Financial backing for this initiative comes from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), amounting to over 22 million euros, alongside a total eligible funding exceeding 26 million euros when including co-financing. This funding aims to facilitate the necessary adjustments to these properties, ensuring they can serve as effective shelters in emergency situations, thereby enhancing the overall safety and readiness of the Latvian populace.
