VIDEO: otter found under barbecue and rescued from house in Nova Odessa
An otter was rescued in Nova Odessa, Brazil, after entering a homeowner's backyard and hiding under a barbecue.
On Friday, a resident in Nova Odessa, São Paulo, discovered an otter lurking under their barbecue grill, leading to a rescue operation involving the Fire Department and Civil Defense. The homeowner, Márcia Medeiros, initially thought the noise was from a cat, only to find the otter upon investigation. To ensure safety, a containment cage was used for the animal during the rescue process, involving local authorities to manage both the animal's and the public's safety.
After successful extraction from the home, the otter was transported to a conservation area along the Piracicaba River, situated in the Americana region of São Paulo. This relocation was chosen specifically to provide a safe and suitable habitat for the otter, away from urban areas. The process highlights not only the human-wildlife interaction common in suburban areas but also illustrates the commitment of local authorities in addressing wildlife emergencies with care and responsibility.
The incident drew attention to the presence of otters in urban settings, prompting expert commentary from Thomaz Henrique Barrella, a biologist from the José Pedro de Oliveira Foundation. According to Barrella, such rescues are significant for maintaining ecological balance and the well-being of wildlife amidst increasing urban development, indicating a need for greater awareness of wildlife habitats and the impacts of human expansion on natural ecosystems.
