Egyptian Minister of Supply: No Change to Subsidized Bread Price
The Egyptian Minister of Supply announced that the price of subsidized bread will remain unchanged despite a recent fuel price hike.
Egypt's Minister of Supply and Internal Trade, Sherif Farouk, has confirmed that the government will not alter the price of subsidized baladi bread, which is currently set at 20 piastres per loaf, even in light of the recent announcement to raise fuel prices. This decision aims to alleviate any additional financial burden on citizens, as the state will absorb the increased production costs stemming from the surge in diesel prices commonly used in bakeries.
Farouk indicated that the government's financial commitment to maintaining the bread price would amount to approximately 1.6 billion Egyptian pounds (around $30.3 million) annually. This cost will be covered by the General Authority for Supply Commodities to ensure the continuity of the subsidized bread system without imposing any extra payments on the public. Furthermore, the minister reassured citizens that the prices of other subsidized food items will remain stable while ensuring their availability in consumer cooperatives and supply outlets.
To monitor the situation effectively, the ministry has established a central operations room that will operate around the clock to oversee the availability of subsidized goods and petroleum products. The operations will be coordinated with supply directorates in various governorates, reinforcing regulatory campaigns in markets, bakeries, and fuel stations to prevent any market manipulation and ensure fair pricing for consumers.
