Egypt raises fuel prices by up to 30 percent

Egypt has increased domestic fuel prices by as much as 30 percent due to global energy pressures linked to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

On Tuesday, Egypt announced a significant increase in domestic fuel prices, with hikes reaching up to 30 percent. This escalation comes amid what the petroleum ministry characterized as "exceptional" global energy pressures linked to the ongoing disturbances in the Middle East. The conflict is reportedly disrupting oil supplies and shipping routes, necessitating these price adjustments across various fuel types, including gasoline, diesel, and natural gas for vehicles.

The petroleum ministry elaborated that the adjustments were prompted by a combination of factors such as disruptions in supply chains, increased risk levels, and higher maritime shipping and insurance costs. These combined elements have pushed the prices of petroleum products to levels that have not been seen in years. Following a brief spike in oil prices above $119 per barrel, the market experienced fluctuations that ultimately saw prices settling around $84 after diplomatic statements indicated a potential resolution to US-Israel tensions in the region.

Significantly, the price of diesel, a critical fuel in Egypt, increased by around 17.1 percent, with new prices set at 20.50 pounds (approximately $0.38) per liter. Similarly, 80-octane gasoline saw a rise of about 16.9 percent to 20.75 pounds per liter, reflecting the heavy impact of global market conditions on local fuel pricing, and raising concerns among citizens regarding the broader economic implications of these increases on living costs and transportation.
