They ask Musk to build a tunnel under the Panama Canal with interactive experience: 'It will showcase ingenuity'
The mayor of Panama City is urging Elon Musk to create a transformative tourist experience by excavating a pedestrian tunnel beneath the Panama Canal through his company, Boring.
Mayer Mizrachi, the mayor of Panama City, has called on Elon Musk to construct a pedestrian tunnel beneath the Panama Canal, describing it as a transformative tourist experience and a marketing tool that could showcase American ingenuity. The proposal comes as Panama City competes for the Boring Company's Tunnel Vision Challenge, which offers a free tunnel project to one of the 16 finalist cities. Mayor Mizrachi recently visited Boring's offices in Texas to discuss the project and its potential benefits for tourism and innovation in his city.
Panama City is competing against 15 other cities, including notable locations in the U.S. such as Fort Smith, Arkansas; Orchard Park, New York; Kansas City; Baltimore; Denver; and Dallas, with the unique distinction of being the only non-American finalist. The proposed tunnel, if constructed, would span approximately 1.6 kilometers and have a diameter of 3.6 meters. Mizrachi's vision sets the scene for an interactive experience that could attract tourists and highlight the advancements of American engineering and technology in a culturally rich context such as the Panama Canal.
By proposing this project, the mayor aims not only to enhance the city's tourism landscape but also to underscore the significance of innovative infrastructure in fostering economic growth and international collaboration. Such a tunnel could serve as a landmark attraction, potentially increasing visitor numbers and showcasing Panama City's commitment to modern infrastructure while honoring its historical and cultural heritage, exemplified by the Panama Canal itself.
