Sparrowhawk captured in Stockholm subway - hunted a pigeon

A sparrowhawk was captured at a subway station in Stockholm after it hunted a pigeon, supported by a collective effort of the public and local authorities.

On Monday, a sparrowhawk made an unexpected appearance at the Skärholmen subway station in Stockholm, where it was observed hunting a pigeon. Andréas Forsman, from the Bird Protection Group Stockholm AB, noted the usual aggression of the hawk in pursuit of its prey. This incident drew significant attention, with numerous reports being made by the public, police, transport management, and the safety personnel of SL, indicating a strong communal interest in the welfare of the bird.

The sparrowhawk, which is known for its swift movements, is not easy to capture, according to Forsman. He explained that their speed requires quick reflexes and appropriate equipment to capture them safely. This highlights the challenges faced by wildlife rescuers working in urban environments where such animals occasionally stray into human infrastructure, complicating their efforts to protect both the animals and the people around them.

Fortunately, the young male sparrowhawk was successfully captured and released back into the surrounding area following the incident. As they are known to be breeding birds, releasing it in close proximity to the capture site was deemed appropriate to ensure its continued wellbeing, allowing it to return to its natural habitat under better conditions.
