NLC applauds FG over new 100% gratuity scheme

The Nigeria Labour Congress has praised the government's approval of a new gratuity scheme for retiring federal civil servants.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), representing the interests of Nigerian workers, has expressed its support for the Federal Government’s recent approval of a new gratuity scheme for retiring federal civil servants. This approval will allow those retiring to receive gratuity equating to 100 percent of their total annual emolument, which is in addition to the pension provided under the Contributory Pension Scheme. This initiative is set to take effect from January 1, 2026, benefiting employees who have served a minimum of ten years in federal service.

Mr. Joe Ajaero, the President of the NLC, highlighted the significance of the approval, emphasizing that gratuity serves as a recognition of the dedication and hard work of civil servants throughout their careers. Unlike pensions, which are largely intended for ongoing support, gratuities are intended as a form of appreciation for their years of service. Ajaero's commendation not only reflects the labour union's advocacy for workers' rights but also indicates an acknowledgment of the government's efforts to improve the welfare of federal employees during their retirement.

This scheme could have substantial implications for the workforce, as it enhances the exit benefits for civil servants, potentially making federal service more attractive. The approval may also foster a more positive relationship between the government and public sector workers, as it addresses long-standing demands for better retirement benefits. Overall, this initiative signals a commitment to improving the livelihood of public servants and could lead to further discussions regarding employee benefits in Nigeria's public sector.
