Tinubu submits FCT budget to Senate for approval
President Tinubu has submitted the 2026 budget proposal for the Federal Capital Territory to the Nigerian Senate for approval.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially submitted the 2026 statutory budget for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration to the Nigerian Senate for consideration. The budget proposal was conveyed through a letter read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, during a plenary session after lawmakers returned from a three-week recess intended for budget defense sessions. This action follows a constitutional mandate that places the approval of the FCT budget under the legislative authority of the National Assembly.
The submission of the FCT budget to the Senate is a commonplace legislative duty, mirroring a similar request made by President Tinubu last year, when he asked lawmakers to approve the 2025 Appropriation Bill, which amounted to N1.7 trillion. This ongoing process reflects the significant role of the Senate in shaping the financial management of the Federal Capital Territory and ensuring that the budget aligns with the country’s legislative and fiscal policies.
In his letter accompanying the budget proposal, President Tinubu emphasized the constitutional framework governing the budget process, specifically citing section 299 of Nigeria's Constitution. This provision underlines the Senate's critical function in reviewing and validating the financial plan for the FCT, affirming the necessity of legislative oversight in fiscal matters concerning Nigeria's capital territory, and ensuring fiscal accountability and transparency in government spending.
