JUST IN: Tinubu seeks Senate confirmation of Oyedele, Abe as minister, NUPRC chairman
President Bola Tinubu has requested the Nigerian Senate to confirm Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance and Magnus Abe as chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission.
On Tuesday, President Bola Tinubu submitted requests to the Nigerian Senate to confirm Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, a position previously held by Dr Doris Uzoka-Anite. In addition, he sought the confirmation of Magnus Abe, a former senator, for the role of chairman of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC). These nominations were announced during a Senate plenary session led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
Taiwo Oyedele, nominated for the Ministry of Finance, comes from Ikaram in Akoko, Ondo State and has a notable background in economics and public policy. Prior to this nomination, he chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, emphasizing his involvement in significant tax reforms intended to modernize Nigeria’s financial landscape. His 22-year tenure at PwC has also equipped him with substantial expertise in fiscal management, which may play a crucial role in his new position.
The confirmation of these nominees reflects ongoing adjustments within the Federal Executive Council, pointing to Tinubu's strategy to strengthen his administration with capable individuals in key roles. As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, Oyedele's expertise could be pivotal to reform efforts, while Abe's political experience might help in steering the NUPRC towards effective governance in the energy sector. The Senate's response to these nominations will be closely watched, as it signifies the degree of support for Tinubu’s administrative agenda.
