Heavy rains collapse two bridges in Azuay and isolate a parish
Heavy rainfall in Azuay province has led to the collapse of two bridges and the isolation of a parish due to extensive road closures.
Heavy rains have caused significant damage in Azuay province, Ecuador, resulting in the collapse of two critical bridges near Sulupali in Santa Isabel and Puente El Recreo in Pijili. The provincial government confirmed these collapses were a direct result of the intense rainfall that affected multiple areas in a short period, leading to road closures and making the parish of Chaucha inaccessible. Several other cantons, including Santa Isabel, Girón, and San Fernando, are also dealing with road disruptions due to the weather conditions.
Juan Cristóbal Lloret, the prefect of Azuay, has activated emergency response measures, which include the involvement of the Canton Emergency Operations Centers (COE). This initiative aims to assess and address the damage and ensure the safety of affected residents. Activities related to road construction and heavy machinery movement have been halted to prioritize emergency response and recovery efforts in response to the critical situation.
As the winter season progresses, authorities have reported that eight provinces are being significantly affected by the ongoing rains and flooding. The provincial government is focusing on immediate relief actions while monitoring the situation closely to prevent further disasters. Such extreme weather events highlight the vulnerability of infrastructure in the region, necessitating discussions about long-term resilience and infrastructure improvement strategies in the face of climate challenges.
