SELECTION OF EXPERTS ⟩ The children’s books published last year are truly good
Last year's children's books highlight active protagonists and complex themes of choice, with experts recognizing several noteworthy titles.
On March 10, the Children's Protection Union and the Estonian Center for Children's Literature announced the best children's and youth books published in 2025. Following the evaluation of over 700 books released last year, a jury of children's literature experts selected 18 notable titles for children and 11 for young adults to receive recognition. Notably, the union's child rights ambassadors also participated in compiling the youth book list to suggest valuable reading material to their peers.
According to Helena Kostenok, a jury member and head of the information department at the Estonian Center for Children's Literature, last year's offerings in children's and youth literature reflect a world where making choices is not always easy but is increasingly important. The featured books present protagonists who actively seek solutions rather than passively waiting for answers to come their way. This approach encourages young readers to engage with complex situations and think critically about their decisions.
The selection process this year marked a significant departure from the usual one recognized book, as the Children's Protection Union awarded special commendations to seven works, indicating a broader recognition of quality in children's literature. This initiative shows an increased emphasis on recognizing a wider range of literature that addresses diverse issues faced by children, thereby enriching the reading experience and fostering a deeper understanding of real-life challenges among young readers.
