Estonia's national ice hockey team is set to participate in the inaugural event of the international 3x3 ice hockey series in Innsbruck this April.
Estonia's national ice hockey team will participate in the first stage of the new international 3x3 ice hockey series, which will take place in Innsbruck this April. This fast-paced format of ice hockey is being supported by the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), highlighting efforts to innovate the sport and make it more engaging for teams and audiences alike. The series, named Ultimate Hockey β Breaking the Ice Tour, aims to promote ice hockey through enhanced gameplay dynamics.
The inaugural tournament will occur in front of the Olympiaworld arena and is part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the Innsbruck Winter Olympics. Estonia will compete alongside host Austria, Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, and the Netherlands. Over three days, a total of 17 matches will be played, with teams divided into two groups to participate in a double round-robin format, followed by placement matches, semifinals, and concluding with bronze and final matches on Sunday.
The 3x3 ice hockey format is designed to be fast-paced and thrilling, offering more space for attacks and individual creativity by allowing three players and one goalie on the ice at a time. This smaller field setup is intended to enhance viewer engagement and excitement, enriching the overall ice hockey experience for fans and participants. With this innovative event, ice hockey authorities are likely looking to attract new audiences and develop interest in different styles of play in the sport.
