Hotspot, Android TV, and... After 31 Days, a Millionaire Couple Escapes from Kidnapper's Clutches
A millionaire couple from India managed to escape from their kidnappers after 31 days in captivity, using an Android TV to send their location to family members.
In a dramatic incident in Uttar Pradesh, Om Gupta and his wife Divya, along with their young daughter, were kidnapped by property dealer Deepak Gangwar and his accomplices on February 5. They were held for ransom in various hotels and flats across Kanpur while their captors confiscated their checkbooks and ATM cards, coercing them to sign over valuable land in Unnao. The couple's desperate situation took a turn when they cleverly utilized an Android TV in one of the rooms to access the internet, send their location via Facebook to their family, and ultimately secured their rescue.
The couple crafted a plan to communicate their dire situation to relatives, as the kidnappers restricted their access to phones. By convincing their captors that they needed an internet hotspot to alleviate boredom, they were able to establish a connection without raising suspicion. This ingenuity highlighted the risks of kidnapping, as well as the potential for technology and personal resourcefulness to overcome adversity in critical conditions.
On learning of their location through the Facebook message, the relatives acted quickly, enlisting the help of the police to break into a locked flat in Kalyanpur where the family was being held. This incident not only underscores the rising concerns regarding kidnapping for ransom in the region but also raises critical discussions about personal safety, property disputes, and the role of technology in emergency situations.
