Tibetan Supporters Held a Rally in Vilnius: Aimed to Draw Attention to Human Rights Violations
Tibetan supporters organized a rally in Vilnius to commemorate the 1959 Tibetan uprising and draw attention to ongoing human rights violations by the Chinese government against Tibetans.
In Vilnius, supporters of Tibet hosted a rally marking the anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule. This uprising saw thousands of peaceful protestors in Lhasa and other regions demanding the withdrawal of Chinese armed forces from Tibet. Tragically, the uprising was forcefully suppressed, resulting in approximately 80,000 Tibetan deaths while many others were forced to flee their homeland.
Organizers of the event emphasized that, despite 67 years passing since the uprising, the situation for Tibetans remains dire as the Chinese government's oppressive actions continue. They highlighted the ongoing aggression by the Chinese Communist Party aimed at eradicating the unique Tibetan culture, nature, and religion. A report from UN experts in February 2023 stated that around a million Tibetan children have been forcibly separated from their families and subjected to assimilation in Chinese boarding schools, which the Tibetan supporters branded as a brutal policy that violates multiple international obligations.
The rally is not just a remembrance of the past but a call for action against continuous human rights abuses in Tibet. This demonstration in Lithuania reflects a broader international concern for Tibetan rights and highlights the pressing need for global awareness and support in the fight against the suppression of Tibetan identity by the Chinese state.
