Tinubu nominates Oyedele as minister
President Bola Tinubu has nominated Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of State for Finance, succeeding Dr Doris Anite-Uzoka.
President Bola Tinubu has officially nominated Taiwo Oyedele, the chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, to serve as the new Minister of State for Finance. This nomination comes as Dr. Doris Anite-Uzoka has been redeployed to the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, marking her third appointment in this administration. The announcement was made through a letter to the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, as confirmed by the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
Taiwo Oyedele, who hails from Ikaram, Akoko in Ondo State, is a well-regarded economist, accountant, and public policy expert. Notably, he has played a crucial role in the recent overhaul of Nigeria's tax system, which was initiated under his committee in August 2023. This reform effort culminated in the delivery of four executive bills that significantly reduced the number of taxes from over 60 to fewer than 10 statutes and incorporated major revisions such as instituting a zero income tax rate for citizens earning N800,000 annually or below.
Oyedele's nomination and the subsequent confirmation by the Senate could have substantial implications for Nigeria's financial governance. As he steps into this ministerial role, he is expected to continue driving fiscal reforms that aim to enhance economic efficiency and growth. The transition in the finance ministry also reflects the administration's strategy to stabilize and boost the Nigerian economy through improved tax policies and better financial planning.
