"Der Spiegel": Iran launched a ballistic missile at a military base with German soldiers

Iran has targeted a military base housing German soldiers with a ballistic missile, causing damage but no reported casualties due to soldiers being in bunkers.

Iran has reportedly launched a ballistic missile strike on the Al-Azraq military base in Jordan, where German troops are stationed as part of an international anti-terror coalition. The attack caused damage to a barracks building but, fortunately, no personnel were harmed as all soldiers were in bunkers during the incident. There is currently no confirmation regarding whether the missile struck directly or if there were any residual debris left from it.

The extent of the damage from the missile strike is still being assessed, and an internal investigation is underway. The base is also home to U.S. Air Force personnel tasked with managing air defense systems, responsible for protecting the installation from such threats. The Al-Azraq base has previously been subjected to missile attacks originating from Iran, highlighting ongoing regional tensions.

Germany has maintained a military presence at the Al-Azraq base for several years, primarily to support coalition air missions through aerial refueling operations. However, "Der Spiegel" reports that due to the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East, military leadership has already reduced the number of German soldiers deployed at the base. Currently, two transport aircraft remain stationed at the airfield, which reflects cautious measures amidst the escalating regional volatility.
