DW: Is the German Army at a Crossroads?
The German military is facing potential threats as Iranian counterattacks target U.S. bases in the region, where German troops are also stationed.
Following initial military strikes by Israel and the United States, Iran launched counterattacks aimed primarily at American military bases. Notably, the German army, known as the Bundeswehr, has personnel stationed at some of these targeted bases. Reports confirm that a strike hit a military base near Erbil in northern Iraq, along with another that targeted a Bundeswehr facility in Jordan. Fortunately, no soldiers were injured as they were in protected positions or accommodations, and the air defense systems successfully intercepted missiles and drones.
A representative from the Bundeswehr's Operational Command indicated that the German soldiers and troops were not the direct targets of these attacks. The German Ministry of Defense reassured that the bases in question are not operated by the Bundeswehr, which regards itself as merely a 'guest' there, sharing the facilities with troops from other nations, including the U.S. This situation has raised concerns about the operational security of the Bundeswehr amid rising tensions in the region.
The Defense Ministry highlighted that precautions had been taken to protect German personnel and assets. This incident draws attention to the complex interplay of international military presence in conflict zones, particularly regarding the safety of coalition forces that operate alongside other national militaries. The ongoing geopolitical tensions and the efficacy of defense systems in such environments will continue to be scrutinized as military engagements unfold in the region.
