Construction of Concrete Mound in Moomba Disaster to Save Costs
A recent audit revealed that the concrete mound, identified as a key cause of the December 29, 2024, Jeju Air passenger plane accident at Muan Airport, was installed without proper regulatory review in an effort to cut construction costs.
A recent investigation by South Korea's Board of Audit and Inspection has identified that the construction of a concrete mound at Muan Airport, linked to the December 29, 2024, Jeju Air plane crash, was executed without proper adherence to safety regulations. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport (MOLIT) is found to have approved the installation of a 2.4-meter high concrete structure and mound without considering vital regulatory standards designed to ensure aviation safety. This oversight particularly pertains to how the localizer (LLZ), which provides directional information to approaching aircraft, was meant to break easily upon collision, a requirement not met due to the ministry's negligence.
