Police arrest suspected mastermind of Ebonyi monarch’s kidnap, murder

Nigerian police have arrested a suspect alleged to be the mastermind behind the kidnapping and murder of a chief in Ebonyi State.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has successfully apprehended a suspect believed to be the mastermind behind the kidnapping and murder of Ezeogo Francis Igwe, the traditional ruler of Ndufu Alike Ikwo. This arrest followed extensive intelligence operations and surveillance efforts initiated after Igwe's abduction last Sunday while en route to church. Tragically, subsequent to the demand for ransom by his captors, Igwe was ultimately murdered.

In addition to the recent arrest, the police had earlier detained nine other suspects linked to the crime, which notably included a member of the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress. According to Police Public Relations Officer Joshua Ukandu, one of the suspects provided crucial information that led to the discovery of a hideout where police recovered multiple firearms and other items associated with the crime. This recovery included a submachine gun, a pump-action rifle, and several locally made pistols, highlighting the seriousness of the criminal operation.

This situation reflects ongoing security challenges in Nigeria, particularly concerning kidnapping and violence against local leaders. The police action aims not only to bring justice for the slain monarch but also to deter future incidents by showcasing their commitment to addressing the spate of abductions that have plagued communities. The incident raises concerns about the safety of traditional rulers who often operate as key figures in maintaining local governance and cultural heritage in the region.
