New Types of Scam Calls in Finland – Police: The Call Should be Ended

Finnish citizens are receiving scam calls disguised as calls from the police, warning them to hang up immediately.

The Eastern Finland Police have issued a warning regarding new scam calls where fraudulent robocalls claim to be from the police. In these automated calls, the recipient is falsely informed that they are suspected of involvement in a police matter and prompted to press a certain number for more details, with an implied threat of follow-up mail if they do not comply. The police stress that they do not conduct such calls and urge citizens to simply hang up when they receive such a call.

The tactic is reminiscent of previous banking scams where callers tried to create a sense of urgency and press for immediate actions. These robocalls are designed to connect victims to an actual human scammer after they press the specified number, initiating a high-pressure conversation aimed at deceiving the victim into providing sensitive information, such as online banking credentials. The police highlight the importance of recognizing these fraudulent schemes and assure the public that no legitimate law enforcement agency would operate in such a manner.

Citizens are advised to be cautious and informed about the techniques used by scammers. The Eastern Finland Police outline key indicators of scam calls, which include a sense of urgency, requests for personal information, and the presence of automated messages. Residents are encouraged to report such calls and share information to help in combating these types of crime effectively, reinforcing public cooperation in maintaining community safety against fraud.
