Historian V. Jocys is proposed to become the chairman of the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture

V. Jocys has been nominated again to chair the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture in Lithuania, having previously held the position from 2014 to 2017.

The chairman of the Lithuanian Parliament, Juozas Olekas, recently introduced V. Jocys as the candidate for the chairman position of the Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture. Olekas praised Jocys as an experienced and dedicated specialist in ethnic-cultural activities. The Culture Committee will soon review Jocys' candidacy, and the matter will return to the Plenary Hall of the Seimas on March 19. If approved, Jocys will begin serving his second term after previously leading the council from 2014 to 2017, succeeding Dalia Urbanavičienė in this role.

Currently, V. Jocys works at the Lithuanian National Museum of Art as a senior curator in the Department of Folk Art Collections. The Council for the Protection of Ethnic Culture was established on August 21, 2000, serving as an expert and advisor to the Seimas and the Government on strategic issues related to the protection of ethnic culture and intangible cultural heritage. The council also oversees the implementation of state support for ethnic culture, ensuring that this aspect is integrated into the national legal system.

The nomination of Jocys highlights the ongoing efforts within Lithuania to preserve and promote ethnic culture, reflecting the nation's commitment to safeguarding its rich cultural heritage. The outcome of the parliamentary discussions surrounding these nominations could have a significant impact on the future direction of ethnic cultural policies and initiatives in Lithuania, reinforcing the importance of experienced leadership in this field.
